I probably should have recorded the Tchaikovsky Violin Concerto a long time ago, but for one reason or another, it just didn't work out that way. And I was beginning to think that the opportunity might have passed me by altogether mostly because I thought that the Tchaik is a concerto you play and record when you are VERY young and full of energy. But so, so many people that I have talked with...friends and fans kept asking me when I would record it and why hadn't I done so yet.
And so I felt I should really explore the possibilities. The fact that I decided to form my own label had a lot to do with this recording. I would not only finally record this concerto, but I would own it as well.
Marin and the Colorado Symphony Orchestra were so helpful with this project. Right around the time that we agreed to do this, I was premiering Clarice Assad's Violin Concerto at the Cabrillo Music Festival and Marin was conducting. I already loved the piece and soon after Marin did as well and she suggested that we record both concerto's live....I agreed.
Clarice Assad wrote this concerto for me at my suggestion as her Master's Degree Thesis from the University of Michigan. Since I knew Clarice through my long association with her father and uncle Sergio and Odair Assad, it was natural for her to write a piece that not only suited my playing but also my personality. She did so and in a most brilliant way. The concerto suits me to a tee and playing it is a huge reward for me. She is immensely talented. Not only as a composer of classical music but jazz and brazilian music as well. She is also a fantastic pianist and singer. Her future is unquestionable and I am proud to be a small part in whatever lies ahead for this unique young woman.
The element that I am so emotionally connected to with this album is old and new. Established and unknown. Standard rep and brand new rep.The Tchaikovsky is the old war horse of violin concerto's written for someone else a very long time ago and yet it is still the most requested concerto on any soloists season. And for good reason. It is grand and challenging in every way. The Assad is a concerto was written for me just last year. It is vibrant and varied and will someday hold it's own in the great, vast violin repertoire. Old and new meet in this album...and so it goes....as music should.
